When Henrietta Lacks went to Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951 to be treated for cancer, her cells began to be used in medical research without consent. These “HeLa” cells have impacted research for seven decades and also became a bioethics issue. We will discuss research and development; HIPPA; uneven standards regarding race, gender, ethnicity, and age; and medical consent and how medical and legal communities view it and who makes the ultimate decision.
