In 1980, wealthy factory owner Carl Fletcher is kidnapped on the driveway of his Long Island waterfront estate. The family pays the $250,000 ransom, and Carl returns home. But, he never fully recovers emotionally. In the context of the Jewish-American immigrant experience, Brodesser-Aken’s novel explores the Fletcher family’s current dysfunctional behaviors, a direct result of their unrecognized and unresolved trauma. This family saga will push us to consider the compromises made in order to achieve the American Dream.
