How to give using a qualified charitable distribution

Did you know that your individual retirement account (IRA) can be a powerful tool for philanthropy? If you’re 70½ or older, you can make a meaningful difference at Ðǿմ«Ã½â€”and enjoy tax benefits at the same time—by making a gift using a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your IRA. (Read More and link to rest of article)

What’s a QCD?

In 2025, using a QCD allows you to transfer up to $108,000 (adjusted annually for inflation) annually from your traditional IRA directly to a qualified nonprofit organization like Ðǿմ«Ã½, tax-free. If you’re 73 or older, your QCD can also count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD), the amount you must withdraw each year from your IRA.

Why Consider a QCD?

  • Tax-smart giving: Subject to annual limits, the distribution of a QCD directly to a qualified nonprofit does not count as taxable income, which can help keep your income below certain thresholds that affect Medicare premiums or the taxation of Social Security benefits.

  • To help satisfy your RMD: If you are age 73 and older and required to take a distribution, a QCD is a great way to help meet that requirement while simultaneously supporting a cause meaningful to you.

  • Maximize your impact: If you don’t itemize your income tax deductions, a QCD offers all of the benefits of an itemized income tax charitable deduction, and the entirety of your gift can go directly to support students, faculty, research or programs at Ðǿմ«Ã½.

How It Works

  1. Contact your IRA administrator and request a direct transfer to Ðǿմ«Ã½.
  2. Your provider will send the funds directly to Ðǿմ«Ã½â€”or send you a check made payable to the university.
  3. Let us know about your gift so we can ensure it is used exactly as you intend. At the Office of Strategic Giving, we like to memorialize these gifts with a non-binding Letter of Intent or gift agreement to ensure your impact and intentions are accurately documented.
  4. Receive written acknowledgement from Ðǿմ«Ã½ which will include the date, amount of your gift, and confirmation that no goods or services were received in exchange for the donation, before filing your tax return.

You Can Support What Matters Most

Whether you are passionate about scholarship support, groundbreaking research, or strengthening the school or program that you studied within, your QCD gift can be directed where it matters most to you.
