Alumna Alene Duerk became the first woman rear admiral in the United States Navy in 1972. Duerk served as director of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps from 1970 until retiring from the military in 1975. In 1974, she received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the nursing school.
