What is the Place of Scientific Photography in History: From Image to Material

March 18, 2022 - 12:00 PM

Clark Hall Room 206, 11130 Bellflower Road

This talk will examine some ways that the history scientific photography challenges a number of widespread assumptions about photography and its history, one typically inflected by art. Professor Nasim, professor and historian of science and technology at the University of Regensburg, will share his initial findings from cross-disciplinary work at nearly two-dozen observatory archives in the USA, Europe and the UK. What emerges is a very different picture of how photography was used by scientists in their everyday, mundane practices.  By using the rich case of astrophotography and its history, Nasim will share another way of looking at photography, and the challenges it poses to more standard accounts. He will show that the history of scientific photography is worth much more of our attention, because there is yet so much more to explore and learn with regard to it.

Dr. Nasim is a 2022 Hildegarde and Elbert Baker Visiting Scholar in the Humanities.

This lecture will also be live-streamed at case.edu/livestream/s2.
