Hildegarde and Elbert Baker Visiting Scholars in the Humanities

The Hildegarde and Elbert Baker Visiting Scholar in the Humanities Endowment provides funding to enrich the academic life of the humanities community at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½.

The funds can be used for a wide range of visitors, ranging from distinguished senior scholars to promising junior scholars. Both U.S. and international scholars are eligible.

The main criterion is that they should enliven and enhance the College’s humanities departments through any combination of guest teaching, lectures, collaborative research, performance, participating in courses, or other scholarly and teaching activities. Visiting Scholars should bring expertise not already available to campus. The fund can support residencies for any period of time up to one year.

The BNC is particularly interested in Visiting Scholars engaged in the following areas of scholarly and creative inquiry:

  • Speculation and the Speculative (see Fall 2023 theme)
  • Intersectional Humanities
  • Global Afrofuturism(s)
  • Race, Social Justice and Digital Humanities
  • Decolonial Methods, Approaches, and Practices
  • Embodiment and Contemplative Practices
  • Critical Health Studies

Eligibility:

Full-time faculty in the arts and humanities withing the College of Arts and Sciences including lecturers and instructors can nominate a Visiting Scholar. 

Joint nominations from two or more departments are welcome and encouraged. 

Application Deadline:

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.  Preliminary inquiries are welcome.

Policies and Expectations:

  • Under current guidelines, visiting scholars in this program cannot be the instructor of record, but any other form of scholarly or teaching activity would be welcome. The fund can support residencies for any period of time up to one year.
  • Stipends and expenses vary, depending on the stature and purpose of the visiting appointment.
  • Within one month of the completion of the grant period, recipients are required to submit the online  describing the impact of the Scholar’s visit. Some aspects of the final report may be used in future BNC's external communication materials.
