We invite outstanding individuals to apply for a new postdoctoral scholar position.  The position involves working with a highly collaborative transdisciplinary team to advance understanding of the generalist function that integrates and personalizes care and fosteris health and equity. 

This position involves a mentored working relationship with Drs. Kurt Stange and Rebecca Etz, Co-Directors of the , and with faculty of the Center for Community Health Integration and other multidisciplinary collaborators. The postdoctoral scholar will work on a variety of connected projects (listed below) while advancing their own personal and professional development.  The postdoctoral scholar may apply for fellowship/grant funding for their own research; if such funding is obtained, the postdoctoral scholar becomes a postdoctoral fellow.

The position is supported by endowment and grant funds and includes support for participation in the Postdoctoral Benefits Program and for travel to up to two professional meetings each year.

The postdoctoral scholar position provides an opportunity to collect and analyze data across the multiple projects highlighted below, leading and co-authoring scholarly output and social media interactions, and synthesizing cross-cutting learning across projects.  The position includes opportunities to work with and supervise students on research projects.  There also is an opportunity to participate in developing an NIH program project grant application that will bring together three research projects and three supporting core facilities to study the Mechanisms and Possibilities of Whole Person Care for Health and Equity.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree
  • Expertise and experience in qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods social science or health services research
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with scientific writing and publication

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working with diverse people in health care and community settings
  • Transdisciplinary experience and an ability to work across multiple sectors affecting health
  • Expertise in ethnographic analysis, computational simulation modeling, network analysis, or spatial epidemiology

Ongoing Projects on which the postdoctoral scholar can work:

  • Wisdom of Practice Initiative, funded by the University Suburban Health Center Foundation to bring to light the mechanisms by which person-focused practice makes a difference in the lives of individuals, families, communities and populations, to examine how contextual factors affect these relationships, and how a new generation sees their place in the future of person-focused health care.
  • Practice Innovations for Equity (PIE), funded by the National Institute on Aging (1R01 AG074946), in collaboration with the of community health centers, to examine the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on health care delivery and quality for people living with multiple chronic conditions.
  • Crisis Advancing Knowledge for Equity (CAKE), funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (1R01 MD016389) in collaboration with the of community health centers to evaluate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the primary care workforce and on the equity and quality of care.
  • Vitality Signs, funded by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (2K2CMS331882 – Rebecca Etz at VCU, PI), to develop a patient-reported comprehensive health measure with focused attention to mental, behavioral, and social health needs among Medicare beneficiaries.
  • Increasing the Feasibility, Impact, and Equity of the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit, funded by the National Institute on Aging (1 R01 AG081996 – Mimi Tarn at UCLA, PI), to evaluate the effect of a multi-level intervention on increasing long-term use of Medicare Annual Wellness Visits and preventive health services, and on reducing racial/ethnic disparities in use.
