Assistant Professor (TT) in Experimental Biophysics - Department of Physics

The ǿմý (ǿմý) Department of Physics is seeking candidates for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the area of experimental biophysics. The search is part of a long-term interest in expanding the scope of biophysics within the Physics Department at ǿմý, and builds on a variety of existing research efforts in the department: theoretical and experimental biophysics (protein dynamics, single-molecule microscopy, modeling of biological systems from the cellular scale to the evolution of populations), experimental soft condensed matter (biosensing, nanotechnologies for cancer therapy), and medical physics (MRI and magnetic  nanoparticle imaging).

The successful candidate will complement these initiatives, and take advantage of the numerous collaborative opportunities available both on campus and in the extensive local biomedical research environment (the ǿմý School of Medicine, the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and a variety of startups). The Physics Department is also one of the leaders in a new Interschool Quantitative Biosciences Program, a certificate for graduate students which fosters interdisciplinary training and engagement across the natural sciences, medicine, and engineering.

We encourage applications from candidates working at any level of biological organization, from single molecules to whole populations. Possible topics include (but are not limited to): biomolecule dynamics and interactions, biological condensates, cytoskeletal mechanics, cell adhesion and tissue organization, epigenetics, systems biology, microbial and cancer evolution. Further, candidates with strengths in developing novel experimental methods or designing experiments that use cutting-edge instrumentation to understand biophysical dynamics will be viewed favorably.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent in physics or a closely related field. They should demonstrate the potential to conduct a program of innovative and funded research, be an effective teacher, and mentor both graduate and undergraduate students. Additionally, they must be committed to working with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students and creating an inclusive environment.

Application Instructions

Applicants should apply to this position at: . Applicants will be prompted to provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a statement of research plans, a statement of teaching, a statement of diversity, and contact information for at least three professional references. The diversity statement should explain either: (a) how the applicant's research, teaching, and/or service have contributed to diversity, equity and inclusion within their scholarly field(s) and/or (b) how the applicant's individual and/or collaborative efforts have promoted structural justice inside and outside institutions of higher learning. This statement should also reflect on the ways in which the applicant's continued efforts will foster a culture of diversity, pluralism, and individual difference at ǿմý into the future.

Questions regarding submission of materials may be submitted with the subject “Experimental Biophysics Faculty Search” to Kimberly Chapple at kdc59@case.edu, Department of Physics, ǿմý. Questions regarding the search may be directed to Prof. Michael Hinczewski at mxh605@case.edu

ǿմý strives to maintain a diverse and inclusive work environment. All applicants are protected under Federal law from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age and genetics.

ǿմý provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities. Applicants requiring reasonable accommodation for any part of the application and hiring process should contact the Office of Equity at 216.368.3066 or to request a reasonable accommodation. Determinations as to granting reasonable accommodations for any applicant will be made on a case-by-case basis.
